Global clean-cooking appliance distributor BURN says it is targeting the distribution of at least two million biomass stoves in Malawi by 2030 as the country seeks to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 51 percent by 2040.
In a press statement, BURN said the target would build on the 166,235 biomass stoves it has already distributed across the country as the company works towards making clean cooking accessible to every household.
The company said expanding access to clean cooking solutions would contribute to Malawi’s efforts to address climate change while improving access to cleaner and more sustainable household energy.
BURN has also called for continued collaboration between the Government of Malawi and private-sector partners to strengthen the country’s carbon market and mobilise international climate finance.
The company said such collaboration would help ensure that carbon projects make a meaningful contribution to Malawi’s national climate priorities.
The development follows a recent engagement between officials from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Climate Change and representatives of BURN, where issues surrounding clean cooking, carbon markets and climate finance were discussed.
BURN said stronger partnerships between government and the private sector will be critical to scaling up clean cooking solutions and supporting Malawi’s long-term climate goals.
