The Malawi Police Service (MPS) has urged Mozambican police officers to uphold human rights principles while carrying out their duties, particularly when dealing with Malawian nationals visiting Mozambique.
Phalombe Police Station Officer-in-Charge, Assistant Commissioner of Police Alex Simenti, said many Malawians have faced various forms of mistreatment when visiting Mozambique, raising concerns over violations of their fundamental human rights.
Simenti made the remarks today at Mbilima Border Post in Mozambique during an engagement with officials from Murumbu Police Station aimed at strengthening cooperation between the two countries on security matters.
He called for closer collaboration between the police services of Malawi and Mozambique to ensure that security operations are conducted professionally and with respect for the rights and dignity of all people.
Meanwhile, Murumbu District Police Superintendent Devalini Armando said Mozambican police will work closely with their Malawian counterparts to ensure the safety and security of people and property.
Armando said she would engage officers operating at the border post to ensure that they conduct their operations in accordance with human rights principles and without violating the rights of travellers.
The engagement is expected to strengthen cross-border security cooperation and promote a safer environment for communities and travellers on both sides of the border.
