Vitumbiko Mumba, Independent Member of Parliament for Mzimba Central Constituency, is set to launch the People Over Politics Foundation (PoPF) next month, an initiative aimed at supporting vulnerable communities, particularly students in public institutions of higher learning.
According to Blair Mhone, Media Director for the organisation, one of the foundation’s key programmes will be the provision of financial assistance to needy students in all public universities and colleges across the country.
Mhone said the foundation will soon engage Deans of Students at various public universities and colleges to establish a transparent process for identifying students who are genuinely in need of financial support.
The initiative is expected to provide relief to students facing financial challenges that could affect their ability to remain in school and successfully complete their studies.
Mumba has committed K200 million to the student support programme for the 2026/27 academic year, demonstrating what the foundation describes as its commitment to putting people’s needs ahead of political considerations.
The K200 million will be distributed in two instalments of K100 million each semester.
The programme is expected to run for five years, covering the 2026/27 academic year through to the 2030/31 academic year.
Meanwhile, Mhone has dismissed rumours circulating that Mumba has left the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), describing the claims as “completely false.”
Mhone maintained that the reports about Mumba’s alleged departure from the MCP were unfounded, as the legislator continues to serve as the Independent MP for Mzimba Central Constituency.
The People Over Politics Foundation is expected to formally launch next month, with further details on its programmes and beneficiary selection process likely to be announced during the launch.
