MSAKA CALLS ON 261 KUHES GRADUATES TO UPHOLD PROFESSIONAL ETHICS

Minister of Education, Science and Technology, Bright Msaka, SC, has urged 261 graduates of Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHeS) to uphold professionalism, integrity and compassion as they embark on their careers in the health sector.

Speaking during the university’s Third Graduation Ceremony, Congregation A, in Blantyre on Wednesday, Msaka emphasised the importance of protecting patients’ dignity, maintaining confidentiality and providing quality healthcare services.

He urged the graduates to remain innovative, ethical and committed to lifelong learning, despite the challenges associated with working in resource-constrained environments.

Msaka said quality higher education is central to achieving Malawi 2063’s human capital development aspirations, stressing the need for universities to produce skilled professionals while promoting research and innovation.

He commended KUHeS for its contribution to health sciences education and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to working with the institution to strengthen the quality and relevance of its academic programmes.

In his remarks, KUHeS Vice-Chancellor Professor Macpherson Mallewa highlighted the university’s achievements in research and academic development during its five years of existence.

Mallewa cited the university’s sixth-place ranking in Africa for research excellence in 2025, according to the Nature Index, its platinum award for Research Excellence and Governance from KPMG in 2026, and its position as 39th in Africa and ninth in Southern Africa in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2027.

He also disclosed that plans to establish a Centre of Excellence in pharmaceutical research and manufacturing were at an advanced stage. The centre is expected to support local medicine production and strengthen research and innovation.

Mallewa urged the graduates to reject corruption and malpractice, uphold professional ethics and apply their knowledge to improve healthcare delivery, particularly in underserved communities.

The graduation ceremony underscores KUHeS’s role in developing skilled health professionals to contribute to Malawi’s healthcare system and national development.
