SAMBO WARNS MUTHARIKA’S PARLIAMENT POSTPONEMENT THREATENS DEMOCRACY

Political analyst Gift Sambo has warned that President Peter Mutharika’s decision to postpone Parliament’s mid-term meeting threatens Malawi’s democratic progress.

Sambo describes the move as retrogressive, arguing that economic challenges should not be used to suspend parliamentary oversight.

He says the decision sets a bad precedent, stressing that the Executive cannot suspend the institution responsible for monitoring its activities.

“Economic circumstances should not be used to rationalise the suspension of democratic institutions such as parliamentary oversight,” says Sambo.

President Mutharika postponed the Fourth Meeting of the 52nd Session of Parliament until the next Budget Meeting, citing the need to address fuel challenges and the ongoing El Niño situation.

He says MPs will continue performing their duties through parliamentary committees.
