Political commentator Gift Sambo has backed calls by the main opposition party for the government to provide regular updates on the President’s activities outside the country, saying a lack of official communication can fuel speculation and misinformation.
Sambo argues that the opposition’s concerns are legitimate, particularly at a time when the country is facing numerous challenges and citizens are keen to understand the President’s engagements abroad.
He says the absence of regular official updates creates room for speculation to dominate public discussions, especially in the current political environment where social media platforms have become major sources of information.
According to Sambo, the line between facts and public perception has become increasingly blurred in contemporary politics, making it necessary for relevant government institutions to communicate clearly and promptly.
He has therefore urged government authorities to manage public perception by providing appropriate information about the President’s official activities, while respecting his right to privacy.
He adds that private trips should be treated and respected as such, underscoring the need for a clear distinction between official engagements that warrant public updates and personal travel that should remain private.
Sambo’s remarks highlight the importance of balancing government transparency, public accountability and the constitutional right to privacy in a democratic society.
