Malawi is set to take a major step towards clean energy and sustainable transportation with the launch of the country’s Electric Mobility Regulatory Framework and Net-Metering Rules scheduled for Wednesday, November 4, 2026, in Lilongwe.
The launch, organised by the Ministry of Energy in collaboration with the Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA), will take place at the Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC).
Minister of Energy, Dr Jean Mathanga, MP, is expected to grace the occasion, which will bring together government institutions, development partners, regulators, utility companies, private sector players, financial institutions, academia, civil society organisations and the media.
The two regulatory instruments, developed by the Ministry of Energy and MERA, are designed to provide guidelines for the adoption of electric vehicles, the development of charging infrastructure and the integration of grid-connected renewable energy systems.
According to the Ministry, the Net-Metering Rules, developed by MERA, are currently being piloted by the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM).
Under the pilot programme, 34 electricity prosumers are expected to export a combined 3.9 megawatts of electricity into the national grid.
The launch will feature technical presentations, electric vehicle showcases, stakeholder discussions and a live demonstration of a net-metering installation.
The initiative is expected to increase awareness among stakeholders, attract investment and accelerate Malawi’s transition towards cleaner and more sustainable energy solutions.
The event will be held under the theme, “Accelerating Malawi’s Energy Transformation through Regulated Electric Mobility and Distributed Generation.”
The Ministry says the initiative reflects government’s commitment to strengthening energy security, promoting innovation and supporting sustainable national development.
The launch comes as Malawi continues exploring opportunities to diversify its energy sources and encourage private sector participation in the energy industry.
