As Malawi continues to grapple with persistent sugar shortages, the Egyptian government has expressed readiness to invest in sugarcane cultivation to help boost local production of the commodity.
Egyptian Ambassador to Malawi Rasha Hamdy said investors from Egypt are prepared to support efforts aimed at transforming Malawi’s sugar industry and strengthening agricultural productivity.
Hamdy noted that increased investment in sugarcane farming could play a significant role in addressing supply challenges while creating economic opportunities for local communities.
She further indicated that Egyptian investors are exploring various areas of collaboration within Malawi’s agriculture sector beyond sugar production.
The ambassador made the remarks in Lilongwe during a ceremony held at the National Food Reserve Agency, where the Egyptian government donated food items to Malawi.
The donation was made through the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DODMA) as part of ongoing cooperation between the two countries.
Hamdy said the food assistance reflects Egypt’s commitment to supporting Malawi during periods of need while strengthening bilateral relations.
Speaking at the event, Minister of Agriculture Roza Mbilizi commended the Egyptian government for the donation and its willingness to invest in Malawi’s agricultural development.
Mbilizi emphasized that Malawi is ready to provide a conducive environment for investors interested in sugarcane production and other sectors of the economy.
The donated food items included beans, cooking oil and milk, which are expected to support vulnerable households through government relief programs.
