Speaker of Parliament Sameer Suleman has met with South Africa’s Minister responsible for international relations to discuss issues affecting relations between the two countries.
During the meeting, Suleman expressed concern over the treatment of Malawian nationals in South Africa, particularly amid ongoing deportations.
He said many Malawians are facing significant hardships as they are being forced to leave the country under difficult circumstances.
According to Suleman, numerous Malawians were not given enough time to secure or make arrangements for property and belongings they had acquired through years of hard work.
He noted that some of those affected have been left homeless and are now sleeping on the streets following their displacement.
Suleman also highlighted reports that many Malawians are struggling to access food and are living in fear and uncertainty as they await their return home.
In response, the South African minister acknowledged the concerns raised and said the government is committed to ensuring that the repatriation process is conducted in an orderly and humane manner.
The minister further assured Malawi that South Africa would work to establish proper arrangements for the safe and dignified return of Malawian nationals to their home country.
