Minister of Local Government and Rural Development Ben Phiri has emphasized the importance of collective action in advancing national development and responding effectively to emergencies.
Phiri made the remarks during the launch of Presidential Order Number 2 on sanitation, where he highlighted the role that citizens, businesses and institutions play in supporting government efforts.
The minister said the country’s progress and resilience in times of crisis depend on the willingness of all stakeholders to contribute towards national goals.
During the event, Phiri commended Prophet Shepherd Bushiri for pledging 10 buses to assist Malawians affected by xenophobic attacks in South Africa.
He described the initiative as a patriotic gesture that reflects the spirit of national unity and responsibility during difficult times.
According to Phiri, support from individuals and the private sector is critical in complementing government interventions, particularly when citizens face emergencies beyond the country’s borders.
Bushiri announced on Tuesday that he was preparing a fleet of 10 buses to transport Malawians wishing to return home from South Africa.
The announcement follows reports of vigilante attacks targeting foreign nationals in some parts of South Africa, raising concerns among affected communities.
Government has since welcomed the intervention, saying such acts of solidarity demonstrate how collaborative efforts can help protect and support vulnerable citizens during times of crisis.
