The Copyright Society of Malawi (COSOMA) has announced a record disbursement of over K1.8 billion in Blank Media Levy Royalties to artists and rights holders for the 2025/2026 financial year.
According to information released by COSOMA, the Blank Media Levy is a form of compensation paid to creators for the private copying of their copyrighted works such as music, films and books.
The levy is collected by COSOMA in collaboration with the Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) at the point of importation of storage devices capable of copying protected works.
This year’s payout of K1.8 billion marks a significant jump from the K1 billion disbursed last year, representing an increase of K800 million. The royalties cover artistic works used between April 2025 and March 2026.
COSOMA said the growth reflects improved compliance at the borders and greater awareness on copyright.
The Society noted the funds contribute to Malawi’s creative economy in line with Malawi 2063.
However, COSOMA urged artists to rely on credible sources of information regarding the Blank Media Levy, citing too much misinformation on how the levy is collected and distributed.
In the music category, top earners this year include Phyzix, Onesimus, Lucius Banda, Zeze Kingston, Driemo, Kelly Kay, Saint ,Skeffa Chimoto ,Patience Namadingo among others.
COSOMA says it remains focused on strengthening enforcement and transparency to ensure creators benefit from their work.
