MRA UPGRADES EIS TO TACKLE NETWORK DELAYS

The Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) has acknowledged intermittent and slow response times on its Electronic Invoicing System, EIS, and says it has moved to address the challenge to protect business operations and tax compliance.

In a public notice released this week, the Authority said the delays were caused by occasional network connectivity issues that affected some users trying to issue invoices through the EIS platform.

The EIS is central to Malawi’s tax administration, requiring businesses to generate and transmit invoices electronically to MRA in real time.

Any slowdown in the system can disrupt sales, stock management, and compliance for traders across the country.

To minimize disruptions, MRA said it has implemented an automated network switching solution.

The new setup enables the system to automatically switch to an alternative network provider whenever slow or intermittent connectivity is detected.

According to the Authority, the intervention is aimed at improving system responsiveness and ensuring service continuity for taxpayers who rely on EIS daily, from supermarkets to manufacturers and service providers.

“MRA continues to monitor system performance and works with relevant stakeholders to further enhance connectivity,” the notice read.

The Authority also regretted any inconvenience caused and thanked taxpayers for their patience and cooperation.

Taxpayers experiencing persistent challenges have been advised to contact the MRA Call Centre on the toll-free line 672 or email callcentre@mra.mw and also visit the nearest Domestic Taxes office for direct assistance.

The Authority reiterated its commitment to supporting businesses through reliable digital systems, saying a stable EIS is key to transparency, efficiency, and the broader goal of “Develop Malawi, Pay Taxes.”
