MALAWI PUSHES FOR STRONGER INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION ON BIODIVERSITY FINANCING

Malawi’s Deputy Minister of Natural Resources, Honourable Chipiliro Mpinganjira, is attending the 17th Conference of the Parties (COP17) to the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity in Yerevan, Armenia.

He is accompanied by Secretary for Natural Resources, Dr Misheck Yagontha Munthali, and other senior ministry officials.

During the conference, Mpinganjira delivered a speech at the launch of Target 18 and the Yerevan Biodiversity Finance Challenge, initiatives aimed at mobilising resources for member countries, supporting ecosystem protectors and cushioning vulnerable households as countries transition from harmful incentives to positive measures that promote biodiversity conservation.

Speaking on behalf of the President, government and people of Malawi, Mpinganjira highlighted the country’s progress, including the development of the Third National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan and a National Biodiversity Finance Plan.

He also called for stronger international cooperation, accessible grant-based and concessional financing, technology transfer and capacity-building to support developing countries in protecting biodiversity.

The COP17 conference opened on October 19, 2026, and runs until October 30, bringing together government officials, scientists, international organisations and environmental advocates to accelerate global efforts to protect biodiversity.

The meeting provides an opportunity to assess progress towards the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, adopted in 2022, which sets ambitious targets for nature conservation by 2030.
