The Liwonde–Matawale Road Rehabilitation Project has officially commenced, with the contractor currently undertaking mobilisation activities ahead of the start of physical construction works.
Senior Public Relations Officer for Roads Authority, Lawrent Kumchenga, says the mobilisation phase involves setting up construction camps, delivering materials, and deploying equipment and workers to the project site. The authority has described this as a key stage before major road works begin.
Meanwhile, environmental and social safeguards for the project are progressing, with the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) already completed and disclosed.
The Roads Authority is also training grievance redress committees in Zomba City, Zomba District, and Machinga District to address concerns from communities affected by the project.
On compensation, the authority says 1,436 out of 1,743 registered Project Affected Persons have received their payments, representing about 82 percent completion. Remaining cases are being handled through verification and administrative processes, but have not affected the progress of the road rehabilitation project.
