The Malawi Government has allocated MK764.9 million for the rehabilitation of roads damaged in Kasungu Municipality and other parts of Kasungu District, three months after Kasungu Municipality Member of Parliament Noel Mkubwi appealed for funding in Parliament.
Roads Authority spokesperson Lawrent Kumchenga said the funds are already being used to repair some of the most affected roads, including the junction near Kasungu Police Station, the road around Kasungu CCAP, and the Shayona turn-off from the M18 Road.
Motorcycle taxi operator Haswel Suphuka and motorist Abdullah Mwase have welcomed the government’s intervention, saying the poor condition of roads in the municipality has forced many road users to spend heavily on vehicle and motorcycle repairs.
Meanwhile, Kasungu Municipality MP Noel Mkubwi expressed satisfaction that the government has responded to the needs of residents by investing in road infrastructure.
However, he urged authorities to also prioritize the road stretching from Kasungu District Hospital through the Juma area to the M1 Road.
Mkubwi further revealed that he has already engaged B&R Company, the contractor carrying out the rehabilitation works, to ensure that the repairs are durable, noting that the affected roads deteriorate frequently and require long-lasting engineering solutions.
