Local and international tourists are expected to enjoy easier access to Nyika National Park following the commencement of rehabilitation works on the Thazima–Nthalire Road.
The road improvement project is expected to address long-standing transport challenges that have discouraged many visitors from travelling to one of Malawi’s leading tourist destinations.
Speaking during a media tour organised by the Vwaza-Nyika Co-Management Trust, Chief Executive Officer George Nxumayo said the rehabilitation of the road will significantly contribute to tourism growth, noting that a reliable road network is essential for development.
Nxumayo said improved accessibility will attract more tourists to Nyika National Park, renowned for its rich wildlife, scenic landscapes, and diverse flora and fauna, thereby contributing to Malawi’s economy through increased tourism.
He commended Isuzu Malawi and the people of Nthalire, under Traditional Authority Nthalire, for supporting the project through fuel donations.
“Isuzu Malawi has contributed 700 litres of fuel, while the people of Nthalire have donated 1,000 litres to support the road rehabilitation project,” said Nxumayo.
According to Nxumayo, Isuzu Malawi joined the initiative as part of its commitment to wildlife conservation, particularly elephant protection, while the people of Nthalire depend on the road for transportation and other daily socio-economic activities.
He also highlighted other development initiatives being implemented by the Trust, including the Nyika–Vwaza Gravity-Fed Piped Water Scheme, which has so far provided clean and safe water to about 14,000 people living around Vwaza Marsh Wildlife Reserve and Nyika National Park.
