Minister of Transport and Public Works Jappie Mhango has launched the K100 billion rehabilitation of Lot One of the 58.4-kilometre Golomoti–Monkey Bay Road, urging the contractor to deliver quality work on schedule and within budget.
The rehabilitation project will be implemented in two phases.
Unik Construction has been awarded Lot One, covering the 30-kilometre Chantulo–Monkey Bay Turn-off section, which is expected to be completed within 24 months with financing from FDH Bank Plc.
Mota-Engil will undertake Lot Two, stretching from Chantulo to Golomoti.
Speaking during the launch ceremony in Mangochi on Thursday, Mhango described the project as a significant investment in Malawi’s transport infrastructure that will stimulate economic growth by improving connectivity for the tourism, agriculture and fisheries sectors.
He said the upgraded road will be constructed to withstand floods and other climate-related disasters that have frequently damaged the route, ensuring improved resilience and long-term reliability.
The minister also cautioned communities against illegal developments within road reserves, saying such encroachments compromise infrastructure development and public safety.
Mhango further called on local financial institutions to continue partnering with government in financing strategic infrastructure projects that support national development.
FDH Bank Plc Chief Executive Officer William Mpinganjira said the bank’s decision to finance the project reflects its commitment to supporting national development through investments in critical infrastructure.
“Quality road infrastructure is essential for economic growth, and we are proud to partner with government in delivering projects that will transform lives and unlock economic opportunities,” said Mpinganjira.
Roads Authority Board Chairperson Engineer Witness Kuwotcha said the authority will closely supervise the rehabilitation works to ensure the contractor adheres to the required quality standards.
Kuwotcha added that the upgraded road will enhance access to markets, schools and health facilities while strengthening tourism and other economic activities in Mangochi District.
