A joint police operation in Lilongwe has arrested one suspect and recovered a gun and other valuables stolen during a robbery at Mbavi-Four Ways near Airwing.
Central West Region Police Public Relations Officer, Sub Inspector Foster Benjamin, says the arrest of Jimmy Banda, 33, follows a massive manhunt by Central West Region, Lilongwe and Lingadzi police officers early Monday morning.
According to Benjamin, Banda and others who are still at large were armed with panga knives, an axe and other weapons. They hacked a 36-year-old accountant on the arm before hitting his wife on the cheek.
“They went away with the couple’s pump gun, phones, three laptops and other items worth over K6.7 million,” he explained.
Following the attack, law enforcers immediately chased the suspects and arrested Jimmy Banda, a resident of Mgona.
The police also recovered a pump gun with 35 rounds of ammunition, three Samsung phones, three laptops, one Bluetooth speaker, a hair straightener set and assorted clothes.
The officers also recovered six panga knives, an axe, crowbar, hacksaw and pliers believed to have been used during the robbery.
Meanwhile, a manhunt for the other suspects is underway.
Banda, who comes from Chilasa Village, Traditional Authority Malenga in Ntchisi District, has since been charged with robbery.
Central West Region Police is warning all perpetrators to stop committing crimes or they will be caught.
