Thirty-six female students from 12 societies at the University of Malawi (UNIMA) have taken part in an inter-society quiz competition aimed at promoting gender equality and preparing young women for leadership roles.
Dubbed Let Her Shine, the competition was organised by the UNIMA Students Association (USA) in partnership with the UNIMA Wildlife and Environmental Society (UNIMAWES) to help female students develop public-speaking skills and participate more actively in academic activities.
USA President Fyabupe Mkhumbwa said the initiative seeks to bridge the gap between male and female students by giving women a platform to demonstrate their abilities and express themselves confidently.
The guest of honour, Memory Modi, an assistant planner for the South East Education Division (SEED), encouraged male students to support their female counterparts, saying such cooperation would help young women develop the skills needed to become future leaders.
Meanwhile, the Education Society emerged as the winner, with an assistant lecturer from UNIMA’s School of Education Abel Chikhali, attributing the victory to thorough preparations.
The lecturer encouraged society members to aim higher, describing the achievement as the beginning of greater success and emphasising the importance of education as a foundation for other programmes.
