President Peter Mutharika has extended heartfelt congratulations to the Catholic Church in Malawi as it commemorates 125 years of its permanent establishment in the country.
In a congratulatory message released on Saturday, September 19, 2026, President Mutharika, together with the First Lady, hailed the Church for its enduring presence and influence in Malawi.
The President commended the vital role the Catholic Church continues to play in the socioeconomic development of the nation.
He noted that throughout its 125 years of evangelization, the Church has made tremendous contributions across various sectors, including education, healthcare, social welfare and pastoral care.
PMutharika said the Government deeply values the Church’s efforts and has encouraged it to continue complementing Government initiatives aimed at promoting the integral development of Malawians.
He further cherished the strong relationship that exists between the Government and the Church, emphasizing his administration’s commitment to safeguarding the freedom of worship in the country.
The Catholic Church’s 125th anniversary celebration is being observed across the country, with main events bringing together the clergy, the faithful and Government officials.
President Mutharika concluded his message by wishing the Church continued success in its missions.
