MUTHARIKA RETURNS FROM SOUTH AFRICA, PLEDGES SUPPORT FOR RETURNED MALAWIANS

President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika has returned to Malawi after a two-week private visit to South Africa, where he also held high-level discussions on the welfare of Malawians affected by recent violence against migrants.

Speaking upon his arrival, President Mutharika disclosed that he met with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa to discuss the challenges facing Malawians living in South Africa following the attacks that forced many to flee.

The President said the discussions focused on finding lasting solutions to the plight of Malawians and other migrants affected by the unrest, expressing optimism that both governments would continue working together.

“I had a series of meetings with my brother, President Ramaphosa, on the problems in the country. After the June 30 deadline, we will continue to work together on how to resolve the issue,” said Mutharika.

The President welcomed all Malawians who have since returned home, assuring them that his administration remains committed to supporting them as they rebuild their lives after the traumatic experience.

He acknowledged the hardships endured by the returnees, noting that many had been forced to abandon businesses they had spent years establishing, while others were separated from their families and lost valuable property during the violence.

Mutharika said his government understands the magnitude of the challenges facing the returnees and will continue exploring ways of providing the necessary assistance to help them recover.

Arriving in high spirits, the President expressed happiness at being back home and said he was eager to resume his official duties without delay.

“I have no time to rest because I have a country to reform,” Mutharika said as he headed straight to his office after landing.
