A grouping operating under the banner Advocacy for Demarcation of Mzimba into Districts has intensified calls for the division of Mzimba District, arguing that the move would accelerate development and improve the delivery of public services across the area.
The group’s chairperson, Keeper Gumbo, made the remarks during a press briefing held in Mzuzu on Saturday, where he emphasized that the proposed demarcation would create opportunities for equitable distribution of development resources.
Gumbo said the advocacy team has begun engaging traditional leaders to seek their guidance, blessing, and support before the proposal is presented to relevant government authorities for consideration.
According to Gumbo, the creation of additional districts would promote economic growth by ensuring that development funds are allocated directly to each administrative unit, allowing projects to be implemented more efficiently.
He expressed optimism that the proposal would receive positive consideration, saying the planned consultations with traditional leaders mark an important step towards achieving the group’s objective.
Responding to the proposal, Inkosi Mthwalo welcomed the engagement and said the matter would be tabled before Inkosi ya Makosi M’mbelwa and the Chiefs’ Council for further deliberation.
Inkosi Mthwalo said a formal response would be communicated after consultations with the traditional leadership structures have been completed, underscoring the importance of following established procedures.
Among the traditional leaders who attended the meeting was Inkosi Kampingo Sibande, whose presence highlighted the growing interest among chiefs in discussions surrounding the proposed demarcation of Mzimba District.
