NFRA WARNS STAFF, TRADERS AGAINST CORRUPTION IN GRAIN PROCUREMENT

The National Food Reserve Agency (NFRA) has cautioned its staff and grain traders against engaging in corrupt practices as government prepares to procure more than 86,000 metric tonnes of grain for the 2026/2027 season.

NFRA Board Chairperson Reverend Howard Matiya Nkhoma issued the warning during an inspection visit to the agency’s Mzuzu Depot.

Speaking during the tour, Reverend Nkhoma stressed that integrity and transparency must guide the procurement exercise, noting that government has allocated K60 billion in the 2026/2027 National Budget for grain purchases.

He said the maize will be stocked as part of the country’s strategic food reserves and for use in humanitarian response efforts when needed.

“Food security is a critical issue in Malawi and President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika has entrusted us with the responsibility of managing the country’s food reserves. Therefore, corruption will not be tolerated,” said Nkhoma.

He added that NFRA will tighten monitoring and oversight mechanisms to ensure the grain-buying process remains transparent and free from malpractice.

During the visit, the Board Chairperson also inspected storage facilities at the depot to assess their readiness ahead of the upcoming grain procurement season.
