LOCAL GOVERNMENT MINISTER WARNS AGAINST CORRUPTION, URGES ACCOUNTABILITY IN COUNCILS

Mponela, Dowa District — Minister of Local Government and Rural Development Ben Malunga Phiri has called on councillors and council officials across the country to uphold accountability and ensure prudent management of public resources, stressing that corruption continues to be a major obstacle to Malawi’s development.

Speaking during a conference attended by councillors and other local government stakeholders in Mponela, Dowa District, Phiri said public leaders are entrusted with managing resources on behalf of citizens and must demonstrate transparency, integrity, and responsibility in the execution of their duties.

The minister emphasized that the Constitution places significant trust in public office bearers, making it imperative for them to lead by example and safeguard public funds from misuse.

Phiri also urged councillors and council officials to fully understand and respect their respective roles as outlined in the Public Finance Management Act and other relevant laws. He warned that interference in designated responsibilities often creates opportunities for the abuse of public resources and weakens service delivery.

Meanwhile, Ntchisi District Council Chairperson Maloto Chimkombero, who also serves as Vice President of the Malawi Local Government Association (MALGA), described the training as an important platform for councillors to enhance their understanding of their responsibilities.

Chimkombero said the conference equips councillors with the knowledge and skills needed to effectively discharge their duties and contribute to the development of their respective councils.

The conference brought together local government leaders and stakeholders to discuss governance, accountability, and strategies for improving service delivery at the council level.
