SADC ORGAN TROIKA SUMMIT CALLS FOR REGIONAL ACTION ON KEY SECURITY, POLITICAL CHALLENGES

The Virtual Extraordinary Summit of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Organ Troika for Heads of State and Government has commenced in Lilongwe, with member states being urged to put forward recommendations aimed at addressing pressing political, health, and security challenges facing the region.

Opening the summit, Malawi’s Second Vice President, Enoch Chihana, emphasized the importance of collective regional efforts in responding to emerging and ongoing crises. He highlighted the need for coordinated support in addressing Madagascar’s political transition challenges, the resurgence of Ebola cases in parts of the region, and persistent security concerns in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Malawi is hosting the high-level meeting in its capacity as Chairperson of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation.

The summit is being presided over by Vice President Chihana, who is representing President Professor Peter Mutharika.

A key agenda item during the meeting is the presentation of a final situation report on Madagascar by former President Dr. Joyce Banda. Dr. Banda, who serves as Chairperson of the SADC Panel of Elders, was mandated to lead mediation efforts in Madagascar, where political transition issues have remained a concern.

The summit is expected to deliberate on the reports presented and formulate recommendations aimed at strengthening regional stability, peace, and cooperation among SADC member states.
