MZIMBA SOUTH MP ARRESTED OVER ALLEGED QUARRY THEFT

Member of Parliament for Mzimba South Constituency, Emmanuel Chambulanyina Jere, has been arrested by police over allegations of quarry theft.

The arrest follows a police summons issued to the lawmaker earlier today.

According to his lawyer, George Jivason Kadzipatike, Jere was asked to report to the Malawi Police Headquarters at Area 30 in Lilongwe before being taken into police custody.

Kadzipatike confirmed the development, stating that his client strongly denies the allegations.

“Emmanuel Chambulanyina Jere denies these allegations. He is currently being taken to Lumbadzi Police Station,” said Kadzipatike.

The lawyer further questioned the timing of the case, noting that the matter dates back five years.

“As I said yesterday, it is unfortunate that this case is coming after five years, and immediately after Chambulanyina has, with others, obtained an injunction against the relocation of the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) headquarters to Blantyre,” he added.

Speaking on the matter yesterday, Jere linked the police summons to a quarry he says he legally purchased from a Chinese company that was working on the Jenda–Edingeni Road project in 2021.

Police have not yet issued an official statement regarding the arrest or the allegations against the legislator.
