The Ministry of Finance, Economic Planning and Decentralisation has reallocated funds that were earmarked for Independence Day celebrations to other priority areas following a directive from President Peter Mutharika.
In a statement, the Ministry said the decision was made to redirect the resources to productive sectors that address urgent national needs.
The move comes as the government continues to navigate a challenging fiscal environment that has persisted over the past five years.
According to the statement, part of the redirected funds will be used to purchase maize to help mitigate the effects of the anticipated El Niño-induced drought, which is expected to threaten food security in several parts of the country.
Another portion of the funds has been allocated for the procurement of medicines for public hospitals.
The Ministry said the reallocation is intended to ease persistent drug shortages and improve healthcare services for Malawians who depend on public health facilities.
The government has also set aside funds to facilitate the repatriation of Malawians stranded in South Africa.
The Ministry said the allocation will support the safe return of citizens facing difficult circumstances abroad.
Describing the President’s directive as “noble,” the Ministry said the decision was taken against the backdrop of severe resource constraints.
It acknowledged that difficult choices are necessary to balance national celebrations with pressing development and humanitarian priorities.
“The Government of Malawi, through the Ministry of Finance, Economic Planning and Decentralisation, is committed to implementing the noble directive by the State President to the fullest,” the statement reads.
President Peter Mutharika announced the directive in a press statement released on 6 July, instructing that all public funds budgeted for this year’s Independence Day celebrations be redirected to programmes that will help reduce poverty and address the country’s most urgent needs.
The Ministry signed off the statement by reaffirming the government’s commitment to prioritising the welfare of its citizens, even as Malawi prepares to commemorate another Independence Day under difficult economic conditions.
