A total of 661 Malawians, including women and children, arrived at the Mwanza Border Post on Tuesday night after fleeing violence and attacks targeting foreign nationals in South Africa.
Information gathered at the border indicates that the returnees arrived aboard eight buses. Among them are 92 infants, including one set of triplets and two sets of twins.
The group also includes 79 young children and 34 pregnant women.
Unconfirmed reports from Mwanza suggest that three of the returnees are suffering from flu-like symptoms and headaches.
Health authorities are expected to assess their condition upon arrival at the designated reception centre.
The returnees are currently being transported to Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre, where government agencies and humanitarian organizations are making preparations to provide them with temporary shelter, food, medical assistance, and other essential support services.
Authorities have yet to release a comprehensive statement on the situation, but efforts are underway to ensure the safe reception and welfare of those returning from South Africa.
The arrival of the group highlights growing concerns over the safety of foreign nationals in South Africa, where incidents of violence against migrants have periodically been reported.
