LILONGWE, June 18, 2026 — Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) Director General Brian Banda has challenged employees of the national broadcaster to demonstrate greater discipline and commitment by reporting for work on time.

Banda made the call on Thursday following a surprise inspection at MBC’s Area 4 studios in Lilongwe, where he monitored staff punctuality as part of efforts to strengthen workplace accountability.

The Director General arrived at the station at approximately 7:15 a.m. and spent over an hour observing employees as they reported for duty through the main entrance. Under government regulations, civil servants and public officers are expected to be at work by 7:30 a.m.

Speaking after the exercise, Banda said the unannounced visit was intended to assess adherence to reporting times and reinforce the importance of punctuality among staff members.

“We have brought a very strong message. We want dedicated members of staff who are disciplined and who are reporting for work on time,” he said.

Banda stressed that MBC operates using public resources and that employees have a responsibility to deliver quality services to Malawians.

“I have always said that MBC is funded by taxpayers, and the only way we can pay back for the support we get from government is to do our job appropriately.

This can only be achieved if, as members of staff at MBC, we report to work on time,” he said.

According to Banda, punctuality is a key ingredient in improving efficiency and enhancing service delivery at the broadcaster.

“This will also help us to serve Malawians better,” he added.
The MBC chief further urged employees to value the opportunity of working for the country’s public broadcaster by demonstrating professionalism, commitment and dedication to their responsibilities.

As part of broader efforts to improve accountability, Banda revealed that MBC plans to introduce a clocking-in and clocking-out system across all regions. The initiative is expected to help management monitor attendance and ensure staff comply with official working hours.

The move comes as MBC continues to implement measures aimed at improving operational efficiency and strengthening public service broadcasting in Malawi.
