President Peter Mutharika has announced that Malawi will commemorate this year’s Independence Day with prayers only, as government redirects all budgeted funds toward economically productive areas.
In his Independence Day Message dated Monday, 6th July 2026, the President said he and the First Lady join all Malawians in celebrating the country’s cherished national day.
He noted that the occasion honours the unity and courage that secured Malawi’s freedom.
“This day reminds us that, when we stand together, we can achieve the unimaginable,” Mutharika said in the statement.
Mutharika added that while political independence was won decades ago, the country’s next challenge remains economic independence.
“In line with this aspiration, this year’s Independence Day will be commemorated differently by observing prayers only,” the President stated.
He directed that all public financial resources budgeted for celebrations should be redirected to areas that can help reduce poverty.
Mutharika said poverty has deepened over the last five years and that the funds will be used in ways that create tangible economic impact.
“I am confident that working together, we will achieve our dream of making Malawi an economically independent country, with equitably shared wealth,” he said.
The President therefore called on every Malawian to join hands in the effort to build a stronger economy.
He emphasized that unity remains key to achieving national goals.
Mutharika also highlighted his Administration’s focus on stability and growth. “Despite global natural, political, and economic headwinds, food security remains under control and macroeconomic stability is steadily taking root,” he said.
He then explained that the stable environment will lay a fertile ground for investments to generate foreign exchange, create jobs, and grow the economy for all Malawians.
Malawi is celebrating 62 years of independence in 2026. The country officially gained its independence from British colonial rule on July 6, 1964.
