Dar es Salaam, Tanzania – June 2026
Malawi is intensifying efforts to strengthen regional connectivity through strategic transport investments aimed at lowering transportation costs, enhancing trade competitiveness and driving economic growth among member states of the Central Corridor Transit Transport Facilitation Agency (CCTTFA).
Speaking during the 15th Inter-Ministerial Committee Meeting of the CCTTFA in Dar es Salaam, Minister of Transport and Public Works Jappie Mhango outlined several key infrastructure and transport initiatives currently being pursued by the Malawian government.
Among the projects highlighted was a proposed rail link connecting Malawi to the Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA) Railway Line, a development expected to improve access to regional and international markets while reducing the cost of moving goods across borders.
Mhango also announced progress towards the finalisation of an airline route connecting Malawi to Lubumbashi in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), a move aimed at facilitating business travel, trade and investment opportunities between the two countries.
The minister said the transport projects form part of Malawi’s broader strategy to strengthen regional integration and unlock economic opportunities through improved infrastructure and connectivity.
“These initiatives are expected to enhance regional connectivity, facilitate trade and create economic opportunities for Malawi and neighbouring countries,” Mhango said.
During the meeting, Mhango officially handed over the chairmanship of the CCTTFA Inter-Ministerial Committee to Rwanda, marking the end of Malawi’s tenure at the helm of the regional transport body.
The Central Corridor serves as one of the most important transport networks in Eastern and Central Africa, linking landlocked countries to seaports and facilitating the movement of goods and services across the region.
Malawi’s continued investment in transport infrastructure is expected to support economic growth, strengthen regional trade links and improve the country’s competitiveness within the Central Corridor network.
