Ngoni Paramount Chief Inkosi ya Makosi Mbelwa V has proposed that the annual cultural celebrations held by the Angoni people under Traditional Authority Mtwalo should no longer take place every year, but instead be organized every five or ten years.
The Paramount Chief made the remarks during celebrations marking Mtwalo Day, which were held at Ezondweni Primary School ground in Mzimba District.
According to Inkosi ya Makosi Mbelwa V, the continued organization of separate annual cultural events in different chiefdoms risks creating divisions among the Ngoni people of Mzimba. He warned that such celebrations could also place unnecessary pressure on communities preparing for the main Ngoni cultural gathering, which is held annually at Hora Mountain in Mzimba.
The Mtwalo commemorative celebration was established last year in remembrance of Inkosi Mtwalo Amon Muhabi Jere, who initiated the event on June 23, 1956.
The ceremony was also intended to honor the legacy of Inkosi ya Makosi Mbelwa II for his role in resisting colonial rule and opposing the administration imposed by European colonial authorities.
Traditional leaders, community members, and cultural enthusiasts attended the event, which highlighted the rich heritage and history of the Ngoni people in northern Malawi.
