GOVERNMENT BLAMES CONTRACTOR CAPACITY FOR DELAYS ON CHITIPA-ILOMBA ROAD PROJECT

Government has attributed the prolonged delays in completing the 31-kilometre Chitipa–Ilomba Road to the previous contractor’s lack of capacity to execute the project within the agreed timeframe.

Minister of Transport and Public Works Jappie Mhango made the remarks on Friday during an inspection tour of the road in Chitipa, where he reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring the project is completed as soon as possible.

Mhango said the Roads Authority is currently assessing bids from prospective contractors and will award the remaining works to a company with the technical and financial capacity to complete the project on schedule.

“We are committed to delivering this important road project. The Roads Authority is scrutinizing bids to identify a capable contractor who will complete the remaining works within the expected timeframe,” said Mhango.

Speaking during the visit, Senior Chief Mwaulambya expressed confidence that the current administration will fulfil its pledge to complete the road, describing the project as vital for improving transport and promoting cross-border trade.

Construction of the Chitipa–Ilomba Road commenced in 2022 and was originally scheduled for completion within two years. However, the project has faced significant setbacks, delaying its completion.
