Minister of Transport and Public Works Jappie Mhango has called on communities in Malosa and Machinga to work together in protecting construction materials and equipment as rehabilitation works on the Liwonde–Matawale (M003) Road get underway.
Mhango made the appeal on Thursday during the official launch of the road rehabilitation project at the ADMARC grounds in Malosa, stressing that community cooperation will be key to the successful implementation of the project.
He also urged the contractors to execute the works professionally and efficiently, while ensuring the road meets high construction standards and serves motorists for many years.
Roads Authority Board Chairperson Witness Kuotcha said the authority is satisfied with the project’s preparations and assured the public that contractors will be closely monitored to ensure the works are completed within the agreed 24-month period.
Member of Parliament for Zomba Malosa Constituency Grace Kwelepeta welcomed the rehabilitation project, describing it as a major boost for the area.
She said the improved road is expected to reduce road accidents, improve transportation, and create employment opportunities for communities along the route.
Rehabilitation of the 47.2-kilometre Liwonde–Matawale Road is scheduled to commence on July 10 and is expected to be completed within 24 months.
The US$58 million project is being financed by the World Bank.
